Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro review: A notch above at price of around Rs 10,000

The notch trend that first started with the iPhone X last year has seemingly become a standard for all "modern" smartphones now. And with Apple continuing to embrace the notch, two years in a row now with the newly launched iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR, it is pretty evident that the groove is here to stay. That's probably one reason why the Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro also has a notch on its screen.

The good thing about the Redmi 6 Pro is that it does not cost as much as what the iPhone X does, or even as much as what some of the other Android counterparts with a notch do. In classic Redmi fashion, the Redmi 6 Pro starts at Rs 10,999. This is for the 3GB RAM and 32GB storage version. There's also a higher-end Redmi 6 Pro with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage, which is available for Rs 12,999.

You can tell the notch is the main highlight of the Redmi 6 Pro since everything else about Xiaomi's new Redmi phone seems very familiar. The Redmi 6 Pro shares many hardware specifics with Xiaomi's other popular Redmi telephones like the Redmi Note 5, the Redmi Y2 and even the Redmi Note 5 Pro. There's an even more affordable non-Pro version of the Redmi 6 Pro that has been launched alongside theRedmi 6 Pro for Rs 7,999. Only the Redmi 6 Pro has a notch though.

     Display

The Redmi 6 Pro offers an FHD+ IPS LCD display with a 19:9 aspect ratio. The quality of the panel is quite good, but, it's not as good as the screen in the slightly more expensive Redmi Note 5 Pro. Having said that, the panel is still good enough for its price segment, offering vibrant colors and more than adequate brightness levels.

The notch not only gives the phone a modern look, but it also results in the greater screen-to-body ratio for a more immersive multimedia experience. Although the phone's default apps use the display cut-out well, many third-party apps behave differently and leave you asking for more. But that's more an Android thing, and less about Xiaomi's implementation.

   Camera

The Redmi 6 Pro comes with dual rear cameras which are seemingly the same deal that is inside the Redmi Y2. This means that the Redmi 6 Pro also has a 12MP + 5MP rear camera system. There is also EIS for videos. The results are also in line with what we have seen from the Redmi Y2, which means that the Redmi 6 Pro is also a capable camera phone in ideal conditions but may not precisely dazzle you in tricky and low light scenarios.

The Redmi 6 Pro captures some beautiful photos with occasional softness in good light with the right amount of detail and mostly spot-on if a little-oversaturated color. Dynamic range could have been better, but overall, the Redmi 6 Pro should suffice for most users in ideal lighting. The Redmi 6 Pro is also able to capture some well-to-do photos -- with occasional softness -- in tricky light situations with good detail, but, then again we've seen better from Xiaomi (with phones like the Redmi Note 5 Pro and the Mi A2). Low light photos have lots of noise although you can get slightly better results using the phone's HHT mode. Much like the Redmi Y2, the Redmi 6 Pro can also capture good bokeh shots, which is a welcome change in this price segment
